Dioxygenase that specifically demethylates DNA methylated on the 6th position of adenine (N(6)-methyladenosine) DNA (PubMed:25936838, PubMed:30078725). N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A) DNA is present at a relatively high level at the very earliest embryonic stages but at low levels at the late embryonic stages and may act as a regulator of gene expression (PubMed:25936838). Promotes differentiation of early germ cells in ovary (PubMed:25936838). Contributes to neuronal morphology, development, and function in the brain (PubMed:30078725). By interacting with histone modifier wds, binds to a specific set of genes, modulates intragenic (N(6)-methyladenosine) DNA levels and thereby maintains transcriptional activation (PubMed:30078725). Also able to catalyze the conversion of the modified genomic base 5-methylcytosine (5mC) into 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) (PubMed:25936838).
