The Golgi complex, also known as the Golgi apparatus, is a cellular organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It is responsible for sorting, modifying, and packaging proteins and lipids that are synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum for transport to their final destination within the cell or for secretion outside of the cell. The Golgi complex is named after its discoverer, Camillo Golgi, an Italian physician and biologist who first described the structure in the late 19th century.
