PRSS21, also known as testisin, is a serine protease gene located on human chromosome 16p13.3. This gene is primarily expressed in the testes, where it plays a significant role in spermatogenesis, particularly during the development and maturation of sperm cells. Structurally, PRSS21 encodes a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored serine protease, a feature that helps localize it to the cell surface, facilitating its involvement in cell signaling and proteolytic pathways. While research into PRSS21 remains ongoing, its specific function is believed to be related to remodeling the extracellular matrix during sperm development, impacting fertility. Beyond reproductive roles, alterations in PRSS21 expression have been observed in some cancer types, such as testicular germ cell tumors, suggesting its potential role as a biomarker for certain malignancies. This dual functionality underscores its importance not only in reproductive biology but also within oncology research.
