Assay by immunoelectrophoresis resulted in a single precipitin arc against anti-rabbit serum, purified and partially purified Penicillinase [Enterobacter cloacae]. Cross reactivity against Penicillinase from other tissues and species may occur but have not been specifically determined.
Penicillinase, also known as beta-lactamase, is an enzyme produced by certain bacteria that confers resistance to penicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. This enzyme works by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring of penicillin, rendering the antibiotic ineffective in inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Penicillinase is encoded by various bacterial genes, commonly found in plasmids or chromosomes, which can be transferred between bacteria, leading to the spread of antibiotic resistance. This enzyme is a significant concern in treating bacterial infections, as it diminishes the efficacy of beta-lactam antibiotics, which are widely used in clinical settings. The presence of penicillinase-producing bacteria necessitates the use of alternative antibiotics or combination therapies that include beta-lactamase inhibitors, such as clavulanic acid, to restore the antibiotic's effectiveness. Monitoring and studying penicillinase activity are crucial for managing antibiotic resistance and developing new therapeutic strategies to combat resistant bacterial strains.
