Thermo Fisher Scientific acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands, sea and waters of Australia. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
In my career at Thermo Fisher Scientific, I have experienced the evolution of our values-driven culture which has served to keep me highly engaged and motivated. Our 4i Values – Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, and Involvement – are the foundational pillars of our overarching culture; they transcend geographical borders, aligning our 120,000+ colleagues across the globe to a common purpose. For me they are a source of pride, not because of what they represent, but because they embody the very essence of why we exist: To enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.
It is also why I am so committed to our reconciliation journey. A journey that is overdue. It’s a journey of self-reflection – at a company and individual level – where I know we will learn so much about ourselves, about Thermo Fisher Scientific, and most importantly, about the deep-rooted cultures and histories of First Nations peoples that have survived for over 65,000 years. I firmly believe we are obligated and privileged to acknowledge, engage with, and contribute to the preservation of the oldest living culture.
Beyond its symbolic value, it’s also a purpose-driven journey of discovery, and hopefully, of positive change. I’m regularly reminded that at Thermo Fisher Scientific, what we do matters. Directly or through our customers, we want to make a tangible difference by both celebrating Australia’s unique First Nations heritage, and helping to address the health disparities that exist between First Nations and non-Indigenous Australians.
I want to recognise the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group for their ongoing leadership and collaboration with external First Nations partners, in particular Evolve Communities and First Nations Consultant Maria Watson-Trudgett, who are guiding the organisation through our reconciliation journey. We thank the global Diversity and Inclusion team, whose support has reinforced that the company’s moral compass points True North.
Finally, I encourage more of our 1,600+ colleagues across Australia and New Zealand to channel the spirit of Involvement and take an active interest in this initiative. I know I plan to, both directly and indirectly, and I urge others to do the same. For my part, I look forward to our internal engagement and in partnering with our customers and suppliers in a meaningful way. It’s through these interactions and collaborations that we will truly learn to better understand and appreciate the role we can play in reconciling the past, present and future.
The artwork, Embracing Reconciliation, conveys our passion, desire and commitment of learning about our shared histories, and the opportunity to engage with, embrace, and celebrate First Nations peoples and diverse cultures.
Our goal for reconciliation is to create an inclusive, welcoming, and culturally safe organisation.
Our enthusiasm to make positive steps calls us to action as we continue our journey, embracing reconciliation.
