Secure Data and Information Sharing
Across the globe, R&D organizations rely on the talent and expertise of partner institutions to accelerate their scientific research. Data is as likely to be shared with a partner half way across the world at a Contact Research Organization (CRO), academic institution or another biopharma or pharma company as it is with the colleague down the hall. When properly done, research collaboration enables project teams to efficiently use external resources to realize project goals and objectives in real-time. This is simply the way today’s science gets done. Despite the pervasive need to collaborate, it is often cited as one of the greatest challenges facing these organizations.
How Ready is Your Organization for Collaboration?
Partner organizations have completely different infrastructures making it difficult to share information. How do you ensure that the right data is safely and securely shared with your partners? The optimal end state is to have an informatics system which will allow researchers sitting at the next lab bench to work hand-in-hand with colleagues on the other side of the world without worrying about data security. Project information is accessible only to those who need it, while allowing data to be updated in real-time. In fact, Thermo Fisher™ Platform for Science™ software has an award-winning product which supports this collaborative work. In 2015, the Platform for Science software’s collaboration capabilities, Core Collaboration, won Best of Show at Bio-IT World. What made Core Collaboration unique is that it provided private multi-tenant collaboration spaces within a deployment of Platform for Science software.
Since then, the need to securely and quickly share information with both internal and external stakeholders hasn’t changed. Nor has the need to do more with less, and organizations continue to use trusted collaboration partners to accelerate scientific innovation. What has changed is how we are addressing this need for our customers.
A New Approach to Collaboration
Realistically, many corporations have a hard time managing this collaboration within or across borders. Organizations who want to do this sort of collaborating need an IT infrastructure to support it. The concept of collaboration needs to be “baked in” to the system and company culture. We identified the Top 5 Cloud Collaboration Strategies while developing Core Collaboration and determined the optimal platform solution is one which can be easily configured to fit the needs of virtually any organization. Different types of partnerships need different types of collaborative ecosystems, so a successful platform should be easily configured to fit the needs of any organization. Over the past several years we have realized that more and more organizations need these capabilities, whether or not they are prepared to fully invest in the collaborative process. Given the benefit provided by enabling organizations to have more than one tenant in production, Thermo Fisher has decided to make Core Collaboration an intrinsic part of the Platform for Science, instead of an optional, add-on product. For current Core Collaboration customers, there will be no change to your product capabilities. Now all of our current and future customers can also benefit from these award-wining capabilities. This means that when a company is ready to form a new partnership, the system is already ready to support it.
Collaboration is central to scientific research and so it only makes sense for it to be integral to Platform for Science software.
