The role of a Laboratory Orchestration Platform

Written by Sarah Yesford, Product Marketing Manager | Published: 07.11.2023

LIMS vs Platform

Digital technologies are changing at an accelerated rate and as a result, many large global organizations have realized the importance of having a well-architected digital experience.

New to the informatics market and inspired by the success of digital platforms (such as Salesforce and Adobe), a laboratory orchestration platform (LOP) provides a cohesive digital laboratory experience by integrating existing applications and infrastructure. The LOP integrates data from various applications, services, processes, and devices, making it accessible for business explorations within a dynamic architecture. It automates data ingestion and links authorized sources, manages identity, compliance, security, and enables agile data governance, while providing a coordinated digital experience for users, enhancing resilience, adaptability, and flexibility. LOPs do not replace existing investments like LIMS, ELN, CDS, and APM but maximize their outputs and scalability.

Scientific ecosystem

Analysts predict that LOPs will provide transformational value across the molecule-to-market value chain. Gartner estimates that LOPs will reach their market plateau in 5-10 years. Implementing an LOP enables market competitiveness, faster drug development, and higher quality standards.

LOP vs LIMS

As the LOP does not remove the need for a LIMS, the LOP is an adjacent technology to existing laboratory informatics systems such as LIMS, CDS, ELN and LIS.  A LIMS is designed to:

  • Manage laboratory operations (i.e. inventory, instruments, people) and data
  • Drive sample-centric workflows and processes
  • Facilitate business workflows and processes (i.e. MES, ERP, QMS, EBR) in quality and manufacturing environments
  • Capture and report critical lab data

While an LOP is designed to:

  • Enable organizations to have agility within their business operation model in response to internal or external disruptions
  • Provide workflow orchestration and integration between software and instrumentation, identity and entitlement, data transfer and transformation, data repository capabilities
  • Establish the data frameworks for advanced data visualization and analytics

As scientific methods evolve, the architectural approach to laboratory informatics is changing to prioritize agility, flexibility, and compliance. The LOP plays a crucial role in implementing digital transformation strategies within the laboratory, enabling seamless integration, and enhancing overall efficiency.
