Centrifuges are used in virtually every lab and for nearly every application, from clinical chemistry and hematology to molecular biology and general sample preparation. Because of this, the centrifuge can be seen as a lab cornerstone. In recent years, lab work has grown more analytically demanding, raising expectations on centrifuge technology.
To deliver on these pressing needs, we recently introduced a new line of high-performance centrifuges, the Thermo ScientificTM General Purpose Pro Centrifuge Series. The result of continuous R&D that builds on decades of experience in separations technology, the General Purpose Pro Centrifuge Series features several new and exciting user enhancements.
A State-of-the-Art Touchscreen
The General Purpose Pro Series modern and intuitive touchscreen interface saves time with a simple-to-navigate menu bar. Quick controls make it easy to program, and the new Lighthouse mode, with enlarged time and status bar is visible from almost anywhere in the lab. As an added convenience, you also have the option of programming end-of-run alerts at different volume settings to ensure alerts are heard without disturbing those around you.
Furthermore, the General Purpose Pro Series interface makes it easy to monitor the health of the centrifuge at a glance. And various control options, such as the ability to set shut down and start times, help prolong the life of the device and reduce energy costs. Notably, smart start-up offers other benefits, too. Namely, having a temperature-ready centrifuge waiting for you in the morning (a close second to a hot cup of coffee).
While these functions vastly improve ease of operation, they have another important advantage: sample safety. Intelligent controls and alerts bring added safeguards, help ensure that samples are kept at the proper temperatures and increasing the likelihood of identifying errors before samples can be damaged.
A New Industrial Design
Equally as important as its cutting-edge software updates is the General Purpose Pro Series new hardware design, which is as functionally advantageous to scientists as it is attractive on the lab bench!
Specifically, these centrifuges boast a new and improved door shape and open angle that brings the reach area and the edge of the door closer to the user for a more pleasant experience. These changes enable the General Purpose Pro Series to not only deliver unmatched capacity – spinning up to40-50ml conical tubes, 196 blood tubes or 24 microplates in one run – but to do so without putting undue strain on researchers loading and unloading samples. For added comfort, one-handed closures are made easier than ever with clear designations for finger placement. General Purpose Pro Series units also employ a reduced closing force to avoid unintentional slamming of the centrifuge’s lid, which could jar its contents.
Protecting the user is just as important as preserving the samples within, the General Purpose Pro Series was designed with reduced pinch-points, helping to prevent accidental injury and reduce troublesome clothing snags.
Time-Saving Features for Improved Workflow
Preparing for a centrifuge run can involve traversing the lab several times for all the products and samples you need. Now, you can take some of that work out of the equation by storing these products right in your centrifuge! This way, everything you need for your run is within arm’s reach. A front facing USB slot adds yet another layer of convenience, as you no longer have to fumble around the unit to find the port – or struggle to connect plugs behind the device.
A Top-of-the-Line Rotor Portfolio & Accessories
Ergonomic benefits don’t stop at the centrifuge itself. We kept comfort and usability in mind to the very core of the system: it’s rotor. Thermo Scientific’s Fiberlite™ Carbon Fiber Rotors improve considerably upon traditional metal rotors, delivering a lighter, more durable and corrosion-free alternative. With more than 20 different varieties available today, you can rest assured that your samples are in good hands – regardless of industry and application.
In fact, we’d go as far as to say that it doesn’t even take two hands to keep them safe with Thermo Scientific ClickSeal™ Biocontainment Lids, which allow for glove-friendly, single-handed opening and closing of sample containers – eliminating the need for multi-turn caps and pressure clips that can prolong and complicate sample handling procedures.
To round out our range of rotor accessories, the Auto-LockTM II Rotor Exchange uses a secure, ergonomic, push-button to facilitate rotor replacements in as little as three seconds – no tools required. With this device, researchers can fully capitalize on the versatility of the General Purpose Pro Series, changing rotors seamlessly as applications and lab needs evolve.
