Coal tar is used for constructing roads, electricity generation and coking. It has been used as topical medical treatment for psoriasis and dandruff and is formulated as a soap or ointment. It is also used for other types of rashes (such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, chronic exudative dermatitis). Coal tar has mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects, and relieves itching. It is also absorbed into the skin cells and is thought to inhibit DNA replication in these cells. This slows down cell division and stops the cells from multiplying excessively. In turn, this reduces the thickening and scaling of the skin and clears up psoriasis plaques. It also finds its application in surface coatings and sealants. Also used as a fuel in open hearth furnaces in the steel industry
