General Description

  • Ethylmercurithiosalicylic acid is an oxidizing reagent that inhibits sulfhydryl-containing active sites of several enzymes
  • It is also known as thimerosal or 2-(ethylmercuriomercapto)benzoic acid sodium salt.
  • It can bind to sulfhydryl compounds, such as glutathione, cysteine, and sulfhydryl groups of proteins
  • Additionally, it can activate inositol triphosphate calcium channels on membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum, resulting in the regulation of cellular functions

Applications

  • Ethylmercurithiosalicylic acid has been widely investigated as a preservative in medicinal laboratory research, including vaccine studies
