General Description

• Hydroxyurea is a member of the class of urea that shows antineoplastic, immunomodulatory, radical scavenger, and antimitotic activities.

• It has inhibitory activity against nucleic acid synthesis.

• It also inhibits ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase, an enzyme necessary to convert ribonucleoside diphosphate into deoxyribonucleoside diphosphate, preventing cells from leaving the G1/S phase of the cell cycle

Applications

• Hydroxyurea has an anti-retroviral activity, inhibiting human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) DNA synthesis in peripheral blood lymphocytes, decreasing the amount of intracellular deoxynucleotides

• This compound also has a radio sensitizing activity, maintaining cells in the radiation-sensitive G1 cell cycle phase and, consequently, interfering with DNA repair

• It has been used for cell cycle synchronization in human breast carcinoma cells

• This compound presents inhibitory activity in cell adhesion and motility assay in ccRCC Caki (HTB-47) and CD9 knockdown cells
