Description

D-Mannitol is used in the determination of glomerular filtration rate. It is used as an inert osmotic control substance. Further, it is used in the treatment of oliguric renal failure. It is also used as a sweetener for people with diabetes, in chewing gums and acts as an adulterant for heroin, methamphetamines and cocaine. It finds application as a research tool in cell biological studies, usually to control osmolarity.
