Presumptively detect, isolate and enumerate pathogenic staphylococci in milk, food, fish and other specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Mannitol Salt Agar (Dehydrated). Due to high concentrations of salt in the medium, most unwanted bacteria are inhibited with the exception of some halophilic marine organisms. Presumptive coagulase-positive staphylococci produce colonies surrounded by bright yellow zones while non-pathogenic staphylococci produce colonies with reddish purple zones.

Staphylococcus aureus is a coagulase-positive, catalase-positive, Gram-positive cocci that occur singly or in pairs, tetrads, short chains, and grape-like clusters. S. aureus can produce a variety of syndromes with clinical manifestations, including skin and soft tissue infections, empyema, bloodstream infections, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, sepsis, and meningitis.

Clearly and easily differentiate Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis while most other bacteria is inhibited by the high salt concentration.

  • Highly selective: due to high concentrations of salt in the medium.
  • Easy to differentiate: Staphylococcus aureus forms yellow colonies with yellow halo while Staphylococcus epidermis forms pink colonies with medium turning pink.
