Isolate and enumerate lactic acid bacteria from food with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ M.R.S. Agar (Dehydrated). This medium is designed to support profuse growth of all strains of lactobacilli, even the difficult and slow-growing strains of Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus fermenti.

M.R.S. Agar is designed to encourage the growth of the 'lactic acid bacteria' which includes species of the following genera: Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Pediococcus, and Leuconostoc. All these species can produce lactic acid in considerable amounts.

  • Superior performance over the tomato juice medium of Briggs1 and the meat extract tomato juice medium of de Man
  • Allows growth of growth of all strains of lactobacilli, especially the difficult and slow-growing strains of Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus fermenti

'Lactic acid bacteria' are Gram-positive, catalase and oxidase negative and are fastidious in their nutritional requirements. Growth is enhanced considerably by microaerobic conditions. Generally, the 'lactic acid bacteria' show delayed growth and smaller colony size than other microorganisms. They may be overgrown in non-selective media, especially if incubation is required for 2-4 days.

What is the difference between XTT (Cat No. X6493) and CyQUANT XTT Cell Viability Assay (Cat No. X12223)?
MTT cell proliferation assays require cellular metabolism to turn over the reagent, and thus only live cells will be counted. Is this true for CyQUANT Direct as well?
If I used XTT (Cat. No. X6493) with an electron coupling reagent, would I get the same results as if I used the CyQUANT XTT Cell Viability Assay kit (Cat. No. X12223)?
When should I use the XTT reagent alone (Cat No. X6493) versus the CyQUANT XTT Cell Viability Assay (Cat No. X12223)?
