Isolate and presumptively identify enterococci / Group D streptococci with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Bile Aesculin Agar (Dehydrated). Bile Aesculin Agar is designed to differentiate between Group D streptococci and non-Group D streptococci.

Group D streptococci hydrolyse aesculin to form aesculetin and dextrose. Aesculin hydrolysis is indicative of a positive result. Bile salts in the medium inhibit Gram-positive bacteria other than enterococci/ Group D streptococci.

Enterococci are part of the normal intestinal flora of human and animals. They have been long recognized as important human pathogens and are becoming increasingly so.

Use Bile Aesculin Agar for the isolation of and presumptive identification of enterococci / Group D streptococci.

  • Easy-To-read: aesculin hydrolysis indicates a positive result.
  • Selective: bile salts in the medium inhibit Gram-positive bacteria other than enterococci/ Group D streptococci.

The value of bile tolerance together with hydrolysis of aesculin as a means of presumptively identifying enterococci / Group D streptococci is widely recognised1,2,3,4,5.

The use of these parameters forms the basis of Bile Aesculin Agar and was described by Swan6 who concluded that the use of this medium is a valid alternative to Lancefield grouping for the recognition of enterococci / Group D streptococci.
