4-pyridylacetylene hydrochloride is used in the preparation of alkynyl platinum(II) compounds with dichloro (1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane)platinium(II) complex in the presence of base and copper iodide as catalyst. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)butadiyne.
