It also plays an important role in the formation of S-adenosyl methionine and in the synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA. Further, it serves as an essential vitamin for erythropoiesis. It is also employed in the treatment of methanol poisoning. In addition to this, it is used in the treatment and prevention of folate deficiencies and megaloblastic anemia.

Solubility
Soluble in sodium hydroxide, acetic acid, phenol, pyridine, alkali hydroxides, carbonates, hot dilute hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. Slightly soluble in water, methanol, ethanol and butanol. Insoluble in acetone, chloroform, ether and benzene.

Notes
Light and heat sensitive. Incompatible with heavy metal ions, strong oxidizing agents and strong reducing agents.
