Sodium deoxycholate is used as a choleretic and an anionic detergent. It is useful for the extraction of membrane receptors, plasma membrane proteins, nuclei isolation and solubilizes fats as well as membrane components. It acts as an intermediate for the production of corticosteroids and microbiological diagnostic media. In addition, it acts as a catalyst in the preparation of protein extracts for immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation of radiolabeled proteins.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

• Sodium deoxycholate is a bile salt and an ionic detergent
• It is a bile acid formed by bacterial action from cholate
• Sodium deoxycholate is considered to be a cholagogue and choleretic since it promotes the flow of bile into the duodenum (cholagogues) or stimulates bile production by the liver (choleretic)

Application

• In chemical approaches, sodium deoxycholate acts as an intermediate for corticosteroid production
• This compound is used to lyse cells and to extract cellular and membrane components, including membrane receptors, plasma membrane proteins, and nuclei, and allows the solubilization of fats for intestinal absorption and membrane components
• Sodium deoxycholate is also used to prepare microbiological diagnostic media and acts as a catalyst in the preparation of protein extracts for immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation of radiolabeled proteins
• In biological experiments, sodium deoxycholate has been used in the lysis buffer prepared for brown adipose tissue
• It is also used in the decellularization of aortic valvular conduit
