Dextran sulfate sodium is used to study colitis (inflammatory bowel disease) as well as an antiviral agent. It functions as a nonsurfactant, suspending agent with gel forming and viscosity controlling properties. It is widely used for laboratory applications including use in preparing a precipitating reagent for the determination of HDL Cholesterol.
