Used for selection of ampr transformed cells and to study the role of penicillin-sensitive transpeptidases in cell wall biosynthesis. Carboxypenicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Analog to ampicillin, Antimicrobial spectrum.
This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
General Description
• Carbenicillin disodium salt is a semisynthetic compound with antibacterial and β-lactamase-resistant activities and is effective against gram-negative bacteria
• In in vitro studies, carbenicillin disodium salt can totally suppress the proliferation of Agrobacterium
Application
• Due to its antibacterial activity this compound can be used to control bacterial cell wall synthesis by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. This can lead to incomplete bacterial cell wall synthesis to eventually cause cell lysis
• It has also been used in studies to evaluate the role of penicillin-sensitive transpeptidases in cell wall biosynthesis
