El bicarbonato sódico actúa como un tampón débil con el que se mantiene un rango de pH de 7,2–7,6. También se utiliza como fuente de nutrientes. Esta solución preparada en agua se utiliza como inyección en la industria farmacéutica. Se utiliza para tratar la contaminación por cemento en la pulpa de perforación de hore pac y los fluidos de perforación basados en agua-bentonita. También se utiliza como tampón.
