Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders of carbohydrate metabolism in which glucose is underutilized, producing hyperglycemia. Measurement of blood glucose levels plays a key role in the diagnosis and management of the disease. Increased glucose levels may also be observed with hyperactivity of the thyroid, pituitary, or adrenal glands. Decreased levels are present in cases of insulin overdose, insulin secreting tumors, myxedema, hypopituitarism, hypoadrenalism, and conditions interfering with glucose absorption.
