Isolate and enumerate microorganisms in milk and dairy products with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Milk Plate Count Agar (Dehydrated). Milk Plate Count Agar is equivalent to the medium recommended by British Standard Institution1 and International Organization for Standardization2.
Liquid milk and other dairy products are highly perishable and can spoil in a few days. The bacteria present in dairy products may cause disease or spoilage. Foodborne illness from dairy product consumption of have been predominantly associated with Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, Camplylobacter jejuni and Escherichia coli O157: H7.
Milk Plate Count Agar is recommended for the enumeration of microorganisms in liquid milk, ice cream, dried milk and whey. Tryptone in the medium provides amino acids and other complex nitrogenous substances. Yeast extract supplies vitamins. Addition of skim milk in the medium makes the conditions optimal for microorganisms which grow in milk.
