General Information

• The cefotaxime sodium salt is a - lactamase considered a third-generation cephalosporin with antibiotic and bactericidal activities
• This compound exerts its biological activity by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall leading to their inactivation. The inactivation of these proteins affects the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains required for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity, resulting in the weakening of cell walls and cell lysis.

Applications

• It is an efficient antibacterial compound that acts against gram-negative bacteria, without activity against gram-positive bacteria such as pseudomonas and penicillin-resistant strains of streptococcus pneumonia
• It has been used for plant cell culture and human cell lines in vitro
• Cefotaxime sodium salt has been used in antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) methods
• Cefotaxime sodium salt is also used to remove bacteria from Ostreococcus tauri cultures
