Separatory Funnels

Used in the lab for liquid-liquid extractions, separatory funnels separate a mixture's components into two solvent phases of different densities. The higher density liquid sinks to the bottom, allowing it to be drained from a valve. The less dense liquid remains in the funnel. Separatory funnels have two distinct features: a stopcock at the bottom, which can be opened or closed to drain liquid, and a tap at the top, which can be opened to release excess vapor pressure.
