Potassium (K)

Potassium (K)

Potassium ([Ar]4s1) (CAS 7440-09-7), is silvery-white, soft, and light. It is the second lightest known metal (lithium is the first). Never found native, potassium is found in minerals in most soils. It is an essential component for plant growth and in human and animal nutrition. Since it is one of the most electropositive metals, potassium is very reactive. Like other alkali metals, it decomposes and can ignite spontaneously in water.

Potassium combines under pressure with silver metal to form 2 new compounds: K2Ag and K3Ag. This chemical is important in neuron (brain and nerve) function, and in influencing osmotic balance between cells and the interstitial fluid, with their distribution mediated in all animals (but not in all...
Potassium hydride is a precursor in the production of various bases by deprotonation, highly-hindered bases potassium triethylmethoxide and potassium 3-aminopropylamide It serves as a powerful base in organic synthesis of deprotonate carbonyl compounds and amines to form enolates and amides...
Potassium forms a blue solution in tetrahydrofoliate which is used for the ? -monoalkylation of -lactones in the presence of 18-crown-6. It is used for generation of potassium ethoxide in solution, for use in the Birch reduction of an aromatic ring, for preparation of potassium amide, This Thermo...
