Gadolinium (Gd)

Gadolinium (Gd)

Gadoliniium ([Xe]4f75d16s2) (CAS 7440-54-2), a silvery-white, rare earth metal, is malleable and ductile. It is relatively stable in dry air, but forms an oxide coating in moist air which spalls off, exposing fresh metal. Gadolinium has unusual superconductive properties and when alloyed with iron, chromium, or related metals is found to greatly improve workability and resistance to temperature and oxidation. Gadolinium also has unique magnetic properties.
