The Thermo Scientific ™ product license you have acquired defines your rights to use Thermo Scientific applications and their modules (extensions) with a specific level of functionality, for a certain version, on designated equipment, and for a specific number of simultaneous users. Additionally, the license can be restricted to a specific period of time or to specific use cases.
Your product license is protected by a license key. Each time the application is launched, it checks for a valid license key. If a valid license key is found, the application runs. Otherwise, you are requested to get a valid license key.
Thermo Scientific products have separate license keys for all editions and extensions.
1.1 – Local (Node-locked) versus Floating licenses
There are two main types of licenses: local licenses, also called node-locked licenses, and floating licenses.
Local licensing allows the software to run on a single, identified computer only.
If you have purchased floating licenses, one or several concurrent users can run sessions at the same time from their computers located on your local network. The number of concurrent users equals the number of tokens purchased. To use floating licenses, you must install FlexNet Publisher license server manager on a local server. Then, on each end user’s computer, you need to specify the location of this local licensing server (see License server configuration). If you have purchased floating licenses, you should have received an email from flex1647@flexnetoperations.com containing instructions to set up the license server and activate the product on the end user’s computer. Please follow those instructions, or contact your local license administrator for additional information.
1.2 – Time-limited versus Perpetual licenses
Licenses can be time-limited or perpetual. Time-limited licenses are valid until a given date, which is shown in the product splash screen at start up or in the About dialog (accessible from the Help › About menu). After this date, Thermo Scientific software will stop working. This is usually the case for trial licenses, Beta licenses, or renewable rented licenses (i.e., yearly subscriptions).
2 – License Manager Action
When you launch a Thermo Scientific product for the first time, you should be redirected to a display which indicates that no product is activated on your computer (See image).
No product is activated
Click Activate license(s). This opens a page where you choose which activation method to use (See image).
If Thermo Scientific products already have been activated on your computer, Thermo Scientific License Manager displays the License screen (See image), listing all activated products.
To select which activation method to use, click the Activate button at the top right of the License screen period (See image).
Once in the Activation methods display (See image):
Select Activation code to enter the received activation code of the purchased product, with an online or offline option depending to the availability of an internet connection on your computer.
When you work in local activation, Thermo Scientific License Manager allows you to manage your licenses.
Note: An Internet connection is required for all following actions. If you do not have Internet connection, refer to the Offline Local Activation.
2.2.1 – Online Local Activation
After purchasing one or more licenses, you will receive an email from flex1647@flexnetoperations.com containing a set of activation codes for each product or option purchased.
Launch Thermo Scientific License Manager.
If you have not activated any product, Thermo Scientific License Manager indicates that no product is activated on your computer (See image). Click Activate license(s).
If you already have one or more products activated on your computer, Thermo Scientific License Manager lists the products that are activated (See image) Click on the Activate button on the top right of the display.

Thermo Scientific software can be sold as yearly renewable subscriptions. These licenses are time-limited and will expire, usually after one year (See image).
In offline activation mode, you are able to perform the same actions described in Online Local Activation but without having an Internet connection on the machine where the license is installed. Note that Internet access from another machine is still required to complete offline activation.
Note: Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
2.3.1 – Offline Local Activation
When you purchase one or more product licenses (editions and/or extensions), you should receive an email from flex1647@flexnetoperations.com containing a set of activation codes for each purchased product or option.
Launch Thermo Scientific License Manager.
If you do not yet have any product activated yet, Thermo Scientific License Manager indicates that no product is activated on your computer (See image). Click Activate license(s).
If you already have some products activated on your computer, Thermo Scientific License Manager lists the products that are activated on your computer (See image). Click Activate button at the top right of the display.
In the Activation mode display (See image), click Offline Activation.
In the Activate License(s) display, copy and paste your activation codes into the provided text field and click Activate.
Follow these steps for offline activation:
Click Create request file in the Offline license Activation (1/3) screen (See image).
Specify where to save the request.tlm file that contains your offline activation request, then click Save.
Transfer your TLM request file to a computer with an Internet connection.
Thermo Scientific software can be sold as yearly renewable subscriptions. These licenses are time-limited and will expire, usually after one year (See image). If you want to reactivate a local license:
When a new version of a Thermo Scientific Software application is released, you will need to upgrade your activated licenses. Important: upgrades in offline mode are only available for licenses in version 2021.1 or later. Before upgrading, you must activate the license codes you have received by email when the version 2021.1 was released.
When you are working with floating licenses, you generally have an external server with all the floating licenses to use. To configure a server, from the Activation methods display (See image), select License server. You are redirected to the license server display (See image) where you have to enter the server name (or its IP address) followed by a port if there is a specific one (if not specified, the default port range is 27000-27009):
By clicking Save, the server is added to the list of available sources where to search for licenses, and is displayed on the Licenses screen. If the server is not reachable, you are redirected to the Floating server not alive (See image) page. As shown on the page, this can be due to a firewall or a network issue. You can then go back to edit the server configuration or save it despite the “Not Alive” status. From the Licenses screen, if the license server status is different from alive, no license will be available from it. You can deactivate a license server by clicking the Disconnect button at the end of the license server line.
Note for Linux users: in order to take your license settings into account, make sure to start the product from a new terminal after saving your license server configuration.
You can edit a license server settings by clicking the Edit button at the end of the license server line.
In order to get your license certificate you will need:
Your activation codes : you should have received them in your delivery email. An activation code is a long string delimited by a pair of – BEGIN TLM CODE – and – END TLM CODE – tags.
Install the license.dat certificate license on the machine where your product is installed following Install a License Certificate instructions.
2.5.2 – Upgrade Certificate Licenses
In order to update your license certificate you will need:
Your FlexNet license server Host ID and one of your licenses Order Line number. This information can be found in TLM in the License Information display: click the product name of any certificate license and look at the Feature Line(s) information which contains your license key. Your Host ID is the string following the “HOSTID=” keywords and your Order Line number is the string following the “SN=” keywords. src=”https://www.fei-software-center.com/wp-content/uploads/tlm-doc/host-id-and-order-line-number-display.jpg”
A machine connected to the Internet to access TLM portal:
Install the updated license.dat certificate license on the machine where your product is installed following Install a License Certificate instructions.
2.5.3 – Reactivate Certificate Licenses
2.5.4 – Install a License Certificate
If you have a license file to activate your application, from the Activation methods display (See image) you have to choose License file. You are redirected to the license file display (See image) where you have to enter the license file content (copy/paste the license file content into the provided text field):
Click the Activate button, you are redirected to the Licenses screen and the activated products are identified as LICENSE_FILE. As for other licenses, you can deactivate a license from a license file by clicking the Deactivation button at the end of the license line.
2.6 – View information on a Local License
To get information on a specific license, from the Licenses screen, click the product name for which you want more information. This opens the License Information display (See image).
2.7 – Transferring Local License(s) to a New Computer
After activating a local license on a computer, you might want to move it to a new one. To do so, you first need to de-activate the first license by returning the associated activation code and then activate it again on the new computer:
On the old computer, follow Deactivation procedure, either online or offline , to return local license(s) so they can be activated on another system.
When deactivating the license(s), be sure to keep a copy of the corresponding Activation code(s): use the Copy all to clipboard button (See image) to copy the deactivated activation code(s).
On the new computer, follow Activation procedure for local license(s), either online or offline , and activate the activation code(s) copied to clipboard.
When using license activation codes, deactivate them before any of the following operations:
Uninstalling Thermo Scientific License Manager
Reinstalling or replacing the operating system
Replacing the hard drive
Disposing of the system
Otherwise, you will not be able to reactivate them on another system because they will still be active on the original system, and it will be difficult or impossible for you to deactivate them for a transfer.
To deactivate a license, follow the instructions according to your licensing mode: online or offline.
3.2 – Firewall Problem
If you have an Internet connection and encounter a connection error (for example “Unable to connect to server https” error) when trying to activate, upgrade, deactivate or reactivate a license, this is caused by your firewall configuration.
You need to configure your firewall to allow the connection to the online activation server:
Server: flex1647.flexnetoperations.com
IP: 64.14.29.39
Port: 443 (https)
You need to configure your firewall to allow the connection to the TLM portal server:
The License Manager uses the Unique Machine Number (UMN) to validate the identity of the machine that initiated the request. The Unique Machine Number value is retrieved from your system hardware information, or from hypervisor-controlled information for virtual machines. If your system hardware is modified since the original activation, the UMN of your machine can be changed and the License Manager will consider your machine to be a different machine. Consequently, the following error message may appear:
"Trying to return a fulfillment issued to a different machine."
If your machine connects to the internet via a Proxy server, you may encounter a connection error (for example “Unable to connect to server https” error) when trying to activate, upgrade, deactivate or reactivate a license. You need to store your Proxy information in TLM to make sure the connection to the online activation server uses the right settings:
3.5.1 – License server machine is down or not responding
Check with your license server administrator that the server name/IP address you’ve entered is correct. Try replacing the server name by its IP address.
3.5.2 – Cannot connect to license server system
Check with your license server administrator if the license server is up and if a specific license server port has been set. Make sure that the firewall settings allow communicating with the server through this port (if no port has been set, default port range 27000-27009 is used).
3.5.3 – Cannot read license file data from license server system
Check with your license server administrator if asglmd vendor daemon is up on the license server.
3.6 – Offline operation failure
When performing an offline activation, deactivation, upgrade or reactivate operation, it can sometimes happen that the request.tlm file generates errors when being processed on the TLM portal. When this happens, no response.tlm file is computed, and the licenses of the failed request are disabled in the License Manager.
