What can you get from high pressure ion chromatography?

A new level of performance. We made sure each component of our IC systems was built to operate with ease at high backpressures. The speed and resolution achieved from Thermo Scientific Dionex HPIC systems was worth the effort.

What is high pressure ion chromatography?

Dionex HPIC systems redefine the way ion chromatography is performed due to their continuous operation at up to 5000 psi when configured as a Reagent-Free IC (RFIC) system. This feature allows for the use of high-efficiency 4μm particle-size columns, which provide better performance.

Why develop high pressure ion chromatography capabilities?

Many of our customers need higher resolution, and one can get significant gains in resolution by reducing an IC column’s particle size. While column efficiency doubles by reducing the particle size from 8µm to 4µm, the smaller particle size increases the column pressure four-fold. Dionex HPIC were designed to operate comfortably at these higher backpressures.

Learn about Thermo Scientific Dionex IonPac 4µm IC columns, their features, and applications.

How can I balance resolution and speed in my Dionex HPIC system?

Our 4µm columns are available in microbore (2 mm) and standard bore (4 mm) inner diameters. Different lengths allow you to choose the optimum balance between resolution and throughput.

      • Use the longer, 250 mm length 4µm particle size columns for higher resolution separations of complex sample matrices.
      • Use the shorter, 150 mm length 4µm particle size columns at higher flow rates to increase productivity without sacrificing performance.

Can I use other particle size columns with HPIC instruments?

Yes, of course. Most IC column chemistries can be run on HPIC instruments. Basic column compatibility with instruments is as follows:

      • Standard bore and microbore columns (2–5 mm ID) are for use on the Dionex Inuvion Core IC system, Dionex Inuvion IC system, Dionex Integrion HPIC system or the Dionex ICS-6000 HPIC system.
      • Applications using gradient separations with two or more eluent solutions on standard bore and microbore columns are run on the Dionex ICS-6000 HPIC system configured for gradient separations.
      • Other HPIC systems support isocratic separations or gradient separations achieved by eluent generation.
