Simultaneous rheological measurements and dielectrical analysis (DEA) help you explain the rheological behavior of a substance by using DEA to look at the sample’s microstructure.The Thermo Scientific™ HAAKE™ MARS™ Rheometer can be equipped with a lower plate setup that has an integrated DEA sensor for simultaneous rheological and microscopic measurements. Typical applications for this method combination include the curing behavior of reactive thermosets, composites, glues, inks, coatings and dental materials.

Rheology is a macroscopic method that looks at rheological properties. Combining it with a microscopic method like DEA helps to then explain rheological behavior. Simultaneous measurement ensures the validity of test results as they’re both run on the same sample under the same conditions. It also saves time as only one sample is prepared and both tests are run at the same time.

The HAAKE MARS Rheometer can be equipped with parallel plate geometries with an integrated DEA comb sensor for simultaneous analyses. A DEA comb sensor is integrated into the lower plate. The combined system can be used to test samples up to a temperature of 220 °C together with the Controlled Test Chamber (CTC) for the HAAKE MARS Rheometer.

Typical applications for this combined method include analyzing the curing behavior of:
  • Reactive thermosets
  • Composites
  • Adhesives
  • Paints, inks and coatings
  • Dental fillers
Depending on the viscosity range, plates with different diameters are available. During the test, a sinusoidal voltage (excitation) is applied, and the resulting current (response) is measured together with the phase shift between voltage and current. Both current and phase shift are used to determine the loss factor, based on which the ion mobility (ion conductivity) is calculated.
