Presumptive drug screening on urine specimens may be performed using immunoassay analyzers. Urine drug tests are frequently used in the criminal justice system, for workplace testing, and by pain management clinics. For situations with lower sample throughput needs, immunoassay analyzers are a budget-friendly, simple testing method that doesn’t require highly trained experts to run the tests and analyze the results. Samples testing positive are sent for confirmation by LC-MS.
Automated drug testing integrates all steps involved in monitoring for drug use—from scheduling a test, tracking chain of custody, barcoding specimens, testing the specimen for drugs, to reporting test results electronically.
For confirmatory testing or even screening for some labs, liquid chromatography (LC) is required to separate drugs of abuse before the ions enter the detector. Depending on your lab's throughput or assay needs, we have varying LC systems that may decrease run-time or sample preparation costs. For labs with routine, lower sample throughput, a single-channel LC system is sufficient. If your lab is testing hundreds or thousands of samples, a multi-channel LC system will help maximize testing efficiency.

An alternative solution to using LC-MS for qualitative and quantitative analysis of drugs is paper spray ionization. This technique provides direct sample analysis capability with your triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, eliminating the need for chromatographic based separation, simplifying your workflow, getting to results faster, and reducing cost per test. This technique minimizes solvent consumption and time-consuming sample preparation steps like derivatization, while avoiding needs for expert operators and instrument downtime.

Confirmation, which is performed by a mass spectrometer, is used to identify and quantitate the analytes of interest often following drug screening. From analysis with a targeted panel to finding the unknowns in a sample using an untargeted assay, we can help match you with a solution to meet your testing needs.
