Organo halides (also known as halocarbons) are organic compounds containing halogens such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine. Depending on the type of halogen atom, these are referred to as organofluourine compounds, organochlorine compounds, organobromine compounds, and organoiodine compounds, of which organic chlorides are the most common. In general, organo halides are produced by synthetic routes rather than a biological route. Numerous chemical reactions involve the use of organic halides, including the Grignard and Reformatsky reactions.
